EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving depicts the Yellow Bugle or Ground-Pine species, Ajuga chamaepitys. The illustration is taken from Adam Lonicer's Krauterbuch, or Herbal, published in Frankfurt in 1557. This particular print is believed to be from a 17th century pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only, featuring captions in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and in English manuscript. The Yellow Bugle, also known as Iva, Officinarum, Ajuga altera, or Ajuga prima, is a low-growing, creeping perennial plant native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The common names "ground pine" and "moschata" refer to its pine-like appearance and fragrant, musky scent, respectively. The botanical illustration showcases the plant's small, yellow, tubular flowers arranged in dense, terminal spikes. The leaves are oval to lanceolate in shape, with a waxy, smooth surface and a distinctive midrib. The plant's creeping stems root at the nodes, allowing it to spread and form dense mats. The Yellow Bugle was valued for its medicinal properties in traditional herbal medicine. It was used to treat a variety of ailments, including respiratory issues, digestive problems, and wounds. The plant was also believed to have antiseptic and antispasmodic properties. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this woodblock engraving serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of the botanical illustrators of the 16th and 17th centuries. The illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the past and the importance of botany in the development of modern medicine.
