Ypres Battlefield Markers and signs

Over the 40 years that we have been writing about these battlefields, there has been many attempts to signpost the places of interest. The earliest were the markers erected by the Ypres League shortly after the war ended, but these, like so many since, were not maintained and have disappeared. Ypres policy since 2015 has been that The Land is the Last Witness. In pursuit of this policy the opposing front lines have been marked by the planting of trees and three clear Touring Routes with explanatory boards set out. Nevertheless, there are still independant signs, of which these are examples. Date: 2016

EDITORS COMMENTS
over the past 40 years, the Ypres battlefields in Belgium have seen numerous attempts to signpost the places of historical interest following the devastating battles of World War I. The earliest efforts were made by the Ypres League shortly after the war ended, but unfortunately, these markers, like many since, were not maintained and have disappeared. Since 2015, the city of Ypres has adopted a new policy, "The Land is the Last Witness," which emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural landscape as a testament to the past. In pursuit of this policy, the opposing front lines have been marked by the planting of trees, and three clear Touring Routes with explanatory boards have been set out for visitors. Despite this, there are still independent signs that can be found throughout the battlefields, such as the ones depicted in this photo taken in 2016. These signs serve as reminders of the rich history and the sacrifices made during the First and Second World Wars. The photo shows a row of markers and signs, some faded and weathered, standing tall against the backdrop of the peaceful landscape. The trees in the background add a sense of tranquility, contrasting with the chaos and destruction that once dominated the area. The Ypres battlefields are a significant part of world history, and these signs serve as important reminders of the past. They provide a connection to the events that took place over a century ago and offer visitors a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made during the wars. As we continue to honor the memories of those who fought and fell, it is essential that we preserve these signs and markers as part of the historical record.
