Masterpiece of African Sculpture Sold 1958
The Benin mask, curved from a single piece of African elephant ivory, associated with King Esigie and his son, King Orhogbua, captured by a British punitive force in 1897. Sold to an American buyer for the sum of £20, 000, one of which was very similar was passed on by Professor Seligman to the British Museum. Date: 1958. A rare and exquisite example of African sculpture from the Benin region, this intricately carved ivory mask is believed to have been associated with King Esigie and his son, King Orhogbua in the late 19th century. Sold at auction in 1958 for £20,000, it was later acquired by Professor Seligman before being passed on to the British Museum.
