Caledonian Park Clock Tower Metropolitan Cattle Market

The Caledonian Park Clock Tower - a Grade II*-listed structure, as the centrepiece of a vast cattle market. The Metropolitan Cattle Market opened in 1855 in Holloway, then on the very fringes of London. The site replaced the ancient Smithfield Cattle Market, whose central location caused frequent problems, with drovers and animals clogging the streets. The seven-storey tower presided over the market until it closed after World War II. The area was later transformed into the Market Estate and Caledonian Park. Date: circa 1908

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Caledonian Park Clock Tower: A Historic Symbol of London's Livestock Trade The Caledonian Park Clock Tower, a striking and historic structure, stands proudly as the former centrepiece of the Metropolitan Cattle Market in Holloway, London. Built in the late 19th century, this Grade II*-listed seven-storey tower presided over the bustling marketplace from circa 1908 until its closure after World War II. The Metropolitan Cattle Market opened in 1855, replacing the ancient Smithfield Cattle Market, which was situated in the heart of London and caused frequent issues due to the constant presence of drovers and livestock in the city streets. The new market, located on the outskirts of London in Holloway, offered a more open-air and spacious environment for the livestock trade to thrive. The Caledonian Park Clock Tower, with its impressive height and ornate design, served as a beacon for traders and farmers from across the country. The market's stalls were filled with a diverse range of livestock, from cattle and sheep to pigs and horses, all ready for sale. The open-air marketplace provided an ideal setting for the livestock to be displayed and inspected by potential buyers. The area surrounding the Caledonian Park Clock Tower was later transformed into the Market Estate and Caledonian Park. Today, the clock tower stands as a reminder of London's rich history in the livestock trade, and a testament to the ingenuity of the city's past leaders who sought to improve the living conditions for both the animals and the people of London. This photograph, taken circa 1908, captures the essence of the Caledonian Park Clock Tower and the bustling marketplace that once surrounded it. The image offers a glimpse into London's past, showcasing the importance of agriculture and the livestock trade in the city's history.
