EDITORS COMMENTS
King George V (1865-1936) in his Majestic Coronation Robes, 22nd June 1911. This striking portrait captures King George V in all his regal splendor, wearing the intricately designed coronation robes during his coronation ceremony held on the 22nd of June, 1911. The King, who ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Edward VII, is seen wearing the traditional ermine-trimmed robe and ermine-lined mantle, symbolizing his royal office and the authority that comes with it. The elaborate train of the robe, adorned with gold embroidery and precious stones, cascades down the steps, adding to the grandeur of the scene. Atop his head, King George V wears the Imperial State Crown, a magnificent piece of jeweled headgear that holds significant historical and symbolic importance. The crown, which was made for the coronation of King George IV in 1821, features an array of precious stones, including the Black Prince's Ruby and the Cullinan II diamond. The King is also seen wearing the collar of the Order of the Garter, the oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. The chain of the Order of the Thistle, the highest honor for a Scottish subject, is draped over his shoulders, further emphasizing his role as the monarch of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India. The ceremonial attire, trappings, and regalia of the monarchy are on full display in this portrait, offering a glimpse into the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy.
