In the chaotic aftermath of the Battle of Trafalgar on the morning of October 21, 1805, men from the French vessel The Redoubtable, one of the most formidable ships in the French Navy, attempted to board HMS Victory, Admiral Horatio Nelson's flagship. The Napoleonic War was reaching its climax, and this epic sea battle, fought in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain, would prove to be a decisive victory for the British. The photograph captures a pivotal moment in the battle as French sailors, determined to seize control of the HMS Victory, leap onto the British ship's deck, brandishing their weapons and readying for hand-to-hand combat. British marines and sailors, equally resolute, meet them with muskets and cutlasses, creating a scene of close quarters warfare that was all too common during naval engagements of the 1800s.
