EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intensity and bravery of the Bristol Blenheim bombers during the daring raid on Kiel in the Battle of the Heligoland Bight, September 1939. As the first major military engagement of World War II, this air battle took place on the night of 1st September, just a month after the outbreak of war. The Royal Air Force (RAF) sent a force of 56 Bristol Blenheim light bombers to attack the German naval base at Kiel, located on the Baltic Sea coast. The mission was a significant turning point in the early stages of the war, demonstrating the RAF's ability to carry out long-range bombing raids and inflict damage on enemy targets. The photograph shows the Bristol Blenheims in formation, silhouetted against the moonlit sky as they prepare to drop their bombs on the German port city. The planes' searchlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the night sky and providing a stark contrast to the inky blackness of the sea below. The bravery and skill of the RAF pilots are evident as they fly low over the water, navigating through anti-aircraft fire and avoiding the defensive flak barrages. Despite facing heavy resistance from the German defenses, the RAF managed to inflict significant damage on Kiel, sinking several ships and damaging others. The raid also boosted morale for the Allied forces, demonstrating their ability to strike at the heart of the enemy's territory and disrupt their military capabilities. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the men and women who fought in the skies during World War II, and the pivotal role that air power played in the outcome of the conflict.
