Situated approximately 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) southwest of Mahe Island, Picault Island appears to have been dedicated to the harvesting and drying of mangrove bark at this time. Monsieur Gilbert, a Frenchman, is believed to have managed this operation, overseeing the camp and its staff from the comfort of his residence, which can be seen in the background.
