EDITORS COMMENTS
Philippa of Hainault (1314?-1369), Queen of Edward III of England, is depicted in this beautiful 15th-century portrait. Born in Hainault, modern-day Belgium, Philippa was the eldest daughter of Count Guy of Flanders and his wife, Marguerite of Artois. Her marriage to Edward III of England in 1328 was a strategic alliance between the English and Flemish courts. Philippa brought significant cultural influences to the English court. She introduced Flemish weavers, who established a thriving textile industry in England. Their expertise in producing high-quality cloth, particularly wool, revolutionized the English textile industry and contributed to the country's economic growth. Moreover, Philippa's influence extended beyond the arts. She encouraged the development of the coal mining industry in England. Coal was a valuable resource for heating and powering industries, and its extraction and use increased significantly during her time. This not only led to the growth of the coal industry but also paved the way for the Industrial Revolution centuries later. Philippa was a beloved queen and a devoted mother to her ten children, including the future King Edward IV and King Richard II. She was known for her intelligence, piety, and diplomatic skills, which helped maintain peace between England and Flanders during her husband's reign. Her legacy as a patron of the arts, a supporter of industry, and a diplomat continues to be celebrated in English history.
