Moorish merchant with tobacco pipe, Algeria. In turban, hooded burnous, blue jacket with orange sleeves, white culottes. The Moors were descendants of ancient Mauritania and Numidia. Marchand Maure. Handcoloured woodcut by Doms from Auguste Wahlen's Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples du Monde, (Manners, Customs and Costumes of all the People of the World) Librairie Historique-Artistique, Brussels, 1845. Wahlen was the pseudonym of Jean-Francois-Nicolas Loumyer (1801-1875), a writer and archivist with the Heraldic Department of Belgium.
