Netley Abbey, Hampshire, view towards the east from the transept. Ruins of a 13th century Cistercian abbey destroyed during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. It is reported that Jane Austen visited Netley, finding inspiration for her novel Northanger Abbey (published in 1817). Handcoloured copperplate engraving by J. Storer after a drawing by Francis Nicholson after a sketch by the late Edward Dayes for the Beauties of England and Wales, published by Vernor and Hood, Poultry, London, 1805. Mary Evans Picture Library makes available wonderful images created for people to enjoy over the centuries.
