EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the solemn beauty of The Civil War Monument, located on Cambridge Common in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. Erected in the early 1900s as a tribute to the soldiers from Massachusetts who fought and died in the American Civil War (1861-1865), the monument stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history. The monument, also known as the Civil War Memorial and Lincoln-Soldier Monument, features a larger-than-life bronze figure of President Abraham Lincoln standing atop a granite pedestal. Flanking Lincoln on either side are six Massachusetts soldiers, each depicted in the act of marching forward, their faces etched with determination and resolve. The soldiers are dressed in the uniforms of the era, complete with knapsacks and rifles slung over their shoulders. The monument was designed by Henry Hudson Kitson and dedicated on May 30, 1895, during a ceremony attended by thousands of people. The inscription on the pedestal reads, "In memory of the soldiers and sailors of Massachusetts who died in the service of their country in the war for the preservation of the Union and the abolition of slavery." This photograph, taken around 1905, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the scars of the Civil War were still fresh and the sacrifices of those who fought in the conflict were still deeply felt. The monument continues to stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who gave their lives for the cause of freedom and unity in America.
