Parma

EDITORS COMMENTS
was a majestic four-masted steel-hulled barque, built in 1902 as "Arrow" for the Anglo-American Oil Co Ltd, based in London. This beautiful sailing vessel, with its distinctive tall masts and sails, was a sight to behold on the open sea. In 1912, the "Parma" was sold to F. Laeisz, a renowned shipping firm from Hamburg, Germany. During the First World War, she was interned in Chile, and postwar was assigned to the United Kingdom as war reparations. In 1921, she was sold back to Laeisz. However, her journey did not end there. In 1931, she was sold to Ruben De Cloux and Alan Villiers of Mariehamn, Finland. Tragedy struck in 1936 when the "Parma" was involved in an accident, leading to her sale and hulking at Haifa, in the British Mandate of Palestine, now Israel, for two years before being scrapped. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, captures the "Parma" in her prime, a testament to the rich maritime history of the past.
