EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Annedouche after a drawing by Edouard Travies, showcases the Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus), Ivory Gull (Pagophilus eburneus), and European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) in a stunning display of avian diversity. The image is taken from Richards New Edition of the Complete Works of Comte de Buffon, published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1837. The Northern Gannet, the largest of all the seagulls, is depicted with its wings spread wide, ready to plunge into the water for fish. With its distinctive black and white plumage and long, pointed wings, it is a striking sight both in flight and at rest. The Ivory Gull, named for its pure white plumage, is a rare and elusive bird, found primarily in the Arctic regions. In this engraving, it is shown perched on a rocky outcrop, its delicate features and small size contrasting sharply with the larger Northern Gannet. The European Herring Gull, a common sight along European coastlines, is depicted in its typical pose, standing on a rock with its head cocked to one side and its beak open, as if in search of food. With its gray-brown back and white underparts, it is a familiar sight to many. This beautiful handcolored engraving is not only an exquisite example of ornithological illustration, but also a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these remarkable birds. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the birds to life, making this a must-have for any bird enthusiast or collector of historical prints.
