Nurses & Patients, Front Verandah, Quex Park. The Verandah, which was outside A Ward, offered a sheltered, south-facing outdoor space. Hannah Powell-Cotton, Commandant, is seated, 4th person from the left. Standing alongside her is her daughter Mary Powell-Cotton (1910-1998). Standing behind her is Nurse Fanny Watson. Seated, at the left, is a lady civilian - she may have been a visitor. Standing, alongside the bed in the centre, is Camille Van Dyck, a Belgian soldier who remained at Quex for the duration of the war and worked as a hospital orderly. He had suffered the loss of his speech through shock and his home was in occupied Belgium. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1916

This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite and camaraderie on the front verandah of Quex Park VAD Hospital in 1916. The scene is set outside A Ward, where the sheltered, south-facing outdoor space offered a welcome reprieve from the harsh hospital environment. Seated in the fourth position from the left is Hannah Powell-Cotton, the Commandant of the hospital and wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum at Quex Park. Her daughter, Mary Powell-Cotton, stands to her left. Behind Hannah is Nurse Fanny Watson, who dedicated her service to the care of the wounded soldiers. A Belgian soldier, Camille Van Dyck, stands quietly behind a bed in the center of the photograph. Camille, who had lost his speech through shock, had remained at Quex Park for the duration of the war and worked as a hospital orderly. A lady civilian, possibly a visitor, is seated to the far left of the image. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on October 15, 1914, and closed on January 31, 1919. Run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, the hospital provided essential care to the wounded soldiers during the First World War.
