1652 1722 Brother Charlotte Duchess Elisabeth Ermine Lace Orleans Pearls Pfalz Philippe Plump Liselotte

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 17th century portrait captures the radiant beauty and regal elegance of Charlotte-Elisabeth, Duchess of Orleans, also known as Liselotte von der Pfalz. Born in 1652, she was the eldest daughter of the Elector Palatine and his wife, Elizabeth Stuart, the 'Winter Queen.' In 1671, at the age of 19, she married Philippe, Duke of Orleans, the younger brother of King Louis XIV of France. The Duchess is depicted in the portrait wearing an elegant ermine-trimmed robe, intricately adorned with lace and pearls. Her plump figure, a sign of her good health and prosperity, is framed by the rich textures of the ermine fur and the delicate lace. The ermine, a symbol of royalty and purity, was a common motif in the portraits of the French nobility of the time. Liselotte was known for her intelligence, wit, and strong personality. She was an accomplished writer, keeping a detailed diary throughout her life, which is an invaluable source of historical information. Her correspondence with her husband, who was often away on diplomatic missions, reveals a deep and loving relationship between the couple. Despite her close relationship with her brother-in-law, the Sun King, Liselotte was not a favorite of the French court. Her outspokenness and independence often put her at odds with the court etiquette. However, she remained a beloved figure among her family and friends, and her legacy continues to inspire scholars and history enthusiasts to this day. This stunning portrait, created in the early 1680s, captures the essence of a remarkable woman who defied the conventions of her time and left an indelible mark on history.
