EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Palace of Kucuksu, a Rococco masterpiece nestled on the banks of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Constantinople, Turkey. Built between 1856 and 1857, the palace was commissioned by Sultan Abdul Mecit I and designed by the renowned Armenian architect Nikogos Balyan. The name Kucuksu, which translates to 'small waters,' was given to the palace due to its location at the mouth of the Buyuk Goksu Deresi, or 'Big Waters Stream,' which flows into the Bosphorus. The Palace of Kucuksu was a popular retreat for Ottoman Sultans seeking respite from the bustling city. Its elegant design, characterized by ornate decorative elements and delicate curves, reflects the Rococo architectural style that was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries. The palace's serene setting, surrounded by lush gardens and the sparkling waters of the Bosphorus, made it an idyllic destination for royal relaxation. In this photograph, taken circa 1902, we see the palace in all its splendor, with traditional Turkish boats moored at the shore, adding to the scene's picturesque charm. The Palace of Kucuksu has undergone extensive restoration efforts in recent years and now serves as a venue for governmental receptions and cultural events, continuing to showcase the rich history and beauty of Turkey's Ottoman past.
