EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the haunting beauty and historical significance of the ancient city of Palmyra, Syria, in the 1980s. The image showcases a lone Corinthian column standing proudly against the arid Syrian desert landscape, serving as a poignant reminder of the once grand Temple of Bel (Baal) Complex that once dominated the city's skyline. Palmyra, an ancient civilization and UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its unique blend of Greco-Roman and Arabic architectural styles. The Temple of Bel, dedicated to the god Bel or Baal, was one of the city's most impressive structures, boasting intricate carvings and ornate decorations. The photograph, taken by Hubertus Kanus in the 1980s, offers a breathtaking view towards the temple's complex, with the ruins of other ancient structures visible in the background. The South view of the temple is particularly striking, with the sun casting long shadows over the ruins and highlighting the intricate details of the surviving column. The Temple of Bel, along with many other ancient sites in Palmyra, has faced destruction and restoration numerous times throughout history. The site was first destroyed in the 3rd century AD and later rebuilt, only to be devastated again during the Islamic conquest of Syria in the 7th century. More recently, the temple was destroyed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in 2015, but efforts are underway to restore the site and preserve its rich history for future generations.
