This evocative image, taken from the pages of The Sketch, captures the diverse and prominent passengers of the RMS Lusitania, who were aboard the ill-fated ship when it was tragically sunk by a German torpedo on May 7, 1915. The Lusitania, a British ocean liner, was traveling from New York to Liverpool when it was attacked without warning, resulting in the loss of over 1,100 lives. In the top left corner, Lady Allan, the wife of Sir Hugh M. Allan of Canada and President of the Merchants Bank of Canada, is depicted. She was among the fortunate survivors of the disaster. Next to her, Alfred G. Vanderbilt, the American millionaire, is shown, unfortunately among the casualties. Below Vanderbilt, Mr. D. A. Thomas, a coal-owner and Member of Parliament, is seen, having also survived the sinking. To the right of Thomas, Lady Mackworth is portrayed, another survivor. In the bottom right corner, Hugh Lane, an art collector and gallery founder, is shown, tragically lost during the sinking. Above Lady Lane, Commander J. Foster Stackhouse, an Antarctic explorer, is depicted, having been saved. In the bottom left corner, Captain W. T. Turner, the commander of the Lusitania, is shown, also among the survivors. Another prominent figure lost in the disaster was Charles Frohman, the famous theatrical manager, whose career was cut short by the tragedy. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the human cost of the First World War and the randomness of fate. The Lusitania disaster was a turning point in the war, leading to increased American involvement and ultimately, the United States' entry into the conflict in 1917.
