EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the distinguished visage of Paul von Hatzfeldt (1831-1901), a prominent German diplomat of the 19th century. Born into the noble House of Hatzfeldt-Trachenberg, Count Hatzfeldt rose through the ranks of the German diplomatic corps to become one of the most influential figures in German foreign policy. During his illustrious career, Count Hatzfeldt served as Ambassador to Constantinople from 1878 to 1881, where he played a key role in negotiating the Treaty of San Stefano, which ended the Russo-Turkish War. He later became Foreign Secretary and head of the Foreign Office from 1881 to 1885, during which time he helped to strengthen Germany's position in Europe. From 1885 until his retirement in 1901, Count Hatzfeldt served as Ambassador to London, representing German interests in the heart of the British Empire. This engraving, colored in the 19th century, immortalizes the count's character and stature as a personage of great diplomatic acumen and historical significance. Melchior Hubert Gustav Paul von Hatzfeldt zu Trachenberg was a towering figure in German diplomacy, whose contributions to the German Empire's foreign policy remain an important chapter in European history.
