Peace Palace at The Hague, To Let, WW1

The Peace Palace at The Hague, Netherlands, with a To Let, apply Hohenzollern & Co sign outside it (superimposed on the photograph). The building seems redundant now that the First World War has started, and would be more suitable for a museum, art gallery, or war picture palace. Date: August 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
August 1914: A Bittersweet Offer - The Peace Palace at The Hague, To Let Amidst the backdrop of the looming First World War, the serene and majestic Peace Palace at The Hague, Netherlands, bore an unexpected sign - 'To Let, apply Hohenzollern & Co.' The once symbol of international peace and diplomacy now seemed redundant, its grand halls and towering structure more suitable for a museum, art gallery, or even a war picture palace. The irony was palpable as the war, a stark contradiction to the very essence of the Peace Palace, had begun. The Peace Palace, built between 1899 and 1913, was the brainchild of Tobias Asser and Frederic de Merode, who envisioned it as a permanent home for the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the International Peace Bureau. Its construction was a testament to the hopes and aspirations of a world that yearned for peace and harmony. However, as the shadows of war loomed over Europe, the Palace appeared to be a relic of a bygone era. The Hohenzollern & Co sign, superimposed on the photograph, added a satirical touch to the scene. The company, known for its real estate dealings, seemed to be cashing in on the Palace's vacancy. Yet, the true irony lay in the fact that the Palace, a beacon of peace, was now up for rent in the midst of the greatest war the world had ever seen. As the world plunged deeper into the abyss of conflict, the Peace Palace stood as a silent observer, a reminder of the ideals that had once seemed so attainable. The sign on its facade was a poignant reminder of the shifting tides of history and the fragility of peace.
