EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 25: Puff-throated Babbler, Pellorneum ruficeps (Watercolor by Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn, from "Neilgherry Birds and Miscellaneous," 1858) The Puff-throated Babbler, Pellorneum ruficeps, is a small, spotted passerine bird belonging to the family Pellorneidae. This exquisitely detailed watercolor painting by Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn captures the bird's distinctive features and anatomy with remarkable accuracy. The Puff-throated Babbler is known for its long, brown breast and the distinctive puff of feathers on its throat, which it inflates during displays. Cockburn's illustration depicts the bird perched on a branch, its body angled slightly, and its head turned towards the viewer. The intricately painted feathers on the bird's body and wings create a textured effect, while the delicate brushstrokes bring out the details of its beak and eyes. The background is kept simple, with a few leaves and branches providing a natural setting for the bird. Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn was a prolific natural history illustrator who worked in India during the 19th century. Her work on "Neilgherry Birds and Miscellaneous" was published in 1858 and is considered an important contribution to the field of ornithology. The Sauropsida class, to which birds belong, emerged around 310 million years ago, and the Passeriformes order, to which the Puff-throated Babbler belongs, is the largest order of birds, with over 6,000 known species. This beautiful watercolor painting not only showcases the natural history of the Puff-throated Babbler but also highlights the artistic skill and attention to detail of Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn.
