EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the 1490s, Perkin Warbeck, a man who would become one of the most intriguing figures in English history, takes refuge at Beaulieu Abbey in the New Forest. Perkin, whose true identity is believed to be Pietro de la Pole, a Flemish impostor, is seen here on horseback, clad in armor, approaching the imposing gates of the abbey. With a small retinue of men and horses following behind him, he sought safety within the walls of this Cistercian monastery, located in the picturesque New Forest in Hampshire. Perkin's presence at Beaulieu Abbey was significant as he claimed to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, one of the two young princes who mysteriously disappeared from the Tower of London in 1483. His audacious claim posed a serious threat to the Tudor monarchy under King Henry VII, who had seized the throne following the death of Richard III. As Henry's forces closed in on Beaulieu Abbey, Perkin and his followers were forced to flee, marking the end of his brief reign as a pretender to the English throne. Despite his eventual capture and execution, Perkin Warbeck's story continues to captivate historians and the public alike, a testament to the enduring allure of the mysterious and the unknown in history. This photograph, taken in 1497, offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in English history, as well as the stunning beauty of Beaulieu Abbey and the New Forest in the late medieval period.
