EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken circa 1975, we see the Armstrong Whitworth AW.660 Argosy C.1, registration G-BDCV, affectionately known as Hamilcar, parked at East Midlands Airport. The Argosy, a versatile and sturdy transport aircraft, was originally designed for military use by the Royal Air Force, with this particular aircraft, XP412, serving in the RAF before being transferred to Air Bridge Carriers. The Argosy is flanked by another iconic aircraft, the Partenavia P.68B Victor, registration G-BCFM. The Victor, a long-range turboprop transport and maritime patrol aircraft, was also a staple of the RAF's fleet during the same era. Both aircraft have been repurposed for civilian use, with Hamilcar now serving in the cargo transport role. In the background, an AW650 Argosy, the civil version of the Argosy, is visible in storage. The Argosy was a popular choice for cargo and passenger transport, and its ability to operate from unpaved runways made it a valuable asset for humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history when these impressive aircraft were still in regular use, and the hustle and bustle of airport life is palpable in the background. The image is a testament to the enduring appeal of aviation and the important role that cargo transport aircraft play in connecting people and places around the world.
