EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Ast Special N26C Shoestring, a legendary Formula One racer designed and built in 1949 by the Ast brothers, Carl and Vincent, in their workshop in Van Nuys, California. The sleek and aerodynamic machine was created for Rodney Kreimendahl and was powered by a potent 85hp Continental C85 engine. With a wingspan of 19 feet, a length of 17 feet 8 inches, and a maximum speed of 210 mph, this racing marvel was a force to be reckoned with on the track. In 1951, the Ast Special N26C Shoestring achieved great success when it was piloted by John Paul Jones to win the prestigious Continental Trophy. After undergoing a restoration in 1965 by Ray Cote, the aircraft's wings were replaced in 1973, and it was registered as N16V. The plans for this unique racing machine were later marketed, and several copies are known to have been built, but none can match the history and allure of the original. Bob Downey is seen here at the helm of this iconic racer, embodying the spirit of innovation and competition that defined the early days of Formula One racing. The Ast Special N26C Shoestring remains an enduring symbol of the passion and ingenuity that drove the aviation and racing industries forward in the mid-20th century.
