EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the Avro 555A Bison II, military registration N9973, of the Fleet Air Arm in the early 1920s. The Avro 555A Bison II was a two-seat biplane torpedo bomber, designed and manufactured by the Avro Company in the United Kingdom. It was developed from the earlier Avro 551, which saw service during the First World War. The Bison II was a significant improvement over its predecessor, featuring a more powerful engine and improved armament. The aircraft was primarily used for torpedo bombing attacks against enemy ships and was also capable of carrying bombs for ground-attack missions. The Fleet Air Arm, the naval branch of the Royal Air Force, was the primary user of the Avro 555A Bison II, with the type entering service in 1923. This photograph shows the aircraft in its natural habitat, aboard a Royal Navy aircraft carrier. The deck crew can be seen working around the aircraft, preparing it for takeoff or landing. The Bison II's distinctive biplane configuration, with its large wings and braced fuselage, is clearly visible. The aircraft's livery, with its red, white, and blue roundels and serial number, identifies it as a Royal Navy aircraft. The Avro 555A Bison II was an important development in the history of naval aviation, paving the way for more advanced torpedo bombers that would serve in the Second World War. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the early days of the Fleet Air Arm and provides a fascinating insight into the technology and operations of the time.
