Bellanca XSE-2 9186

Bellanca XSE-2 A-9186. The Bellanca SE was a Carrier-based scout, with 2 seats intended as a scout aircraft for the United States Navy (USN). The first aircraft, Bellanca XSE-1 A-9186, crashed before delivery for service trials. The second aircraft (pictured), the XSE-2, was similar to the SE-1, but with a stronger fuselage, larger fin and powered by a Wright R-1510 Whirlwind 14 engine, first flown on 23 December 1934. (The XSE-2 was a new-build aircraft, but confusingly allotted the same Bureau Number as the XSE-1.) Date: circa 1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Bellanca XSE-2 A-9186, a carrier-based scout aircraft intended for the United States Navy (USN) during the 1930s. The Bellanca SE series was designed as a two-seat scout aircraft, with the first aircraft, XSE-1 A-9186, crashing before delivery for service trials. The XSE-2, depicted in the image, was a new-build aircraft with several improvements over its predecessor. It boasted a stronger fuselage, larger fin, and was powered by a Wright R-1510 Whirlwind 14 engine, which first took to the skies on 23 December 1934. Despite being a new aircraft, it was confusingly allotted the same Bureau Number as the XSE-1. The XSE-2 was similar in design to the SE-1 but was intended to address the issues that led to the crash of the XSE-1. This photograph, estimated to be from circa 1935, offers a unique glimpse into the history of naval aviation and the development of the Bellanca XSE-2 A-9186.
