Boeing YP-29 34-23
Boeing YP-29 34-23 (Boeing Model 264). The YP-29 is seen here fitted with an experimental variable-pitch propeller. The aircraft was later delivered to NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) at Langley Field in Virginia. The YP-29 was similar to the earlier XP-940 (Wright Field experimental designation), but with a roomy enclosed cockpit, following the lineage of the P-26, through the Model248-XP-936, Model 266-P-26 and XP-940. Boeing also developed a ship-borne version as the XF7B-1-Model 273. Date: circa 1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Boeing YP-29 34-23, also known as the Boeing Model 264, during an experimental phase with a variable-pitch propeller. The YP-29 was an evolution of the Boeing XP-940, featuring a roomy enclosed cockpit, following the design lineage of the P-26, Model 248-XP-936, Model 266-P-26, and XP-940. Boeing also developed a naval variant as the XF7B-1-Model 273. The YP-29 was delivered to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) at Langley Field in Virginia in the mid-1930s. The aircraft's design was similar to the XP-940, but the enclosed cockpit provided better protection and comfort for the pilot. The YP-29's lineage can be traced back to the P-26, with improvements and advancements made in each subsequent model. Boeing's innovative spirit is evident in the development of the variable-pitch propeller, which aimed to optimize engine performance and efficiency. The YP-29's propeller system allowed the pilot to adjust the pitch angle of the blades in flight, providing better control over the aircraft's speed and power. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the history of aviation, showcasing the Boeing YP-29 34-23 in an important stage of its development. The image is part of The Peter Butt Aviation Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online.
