EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a Convair JC-131B military transport aircraft, specifically identified as O-53-7789 (MSN 241), is seen at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base with a distinctive feature: a single Solar T41 auxiliary power unit (APU) mounted in an underwing pylon-mounted pod. The JC-131B, a military variant of the civilian Convair 580, was primarily used for various roles such as tactical transport, command and control, and electronic warfare. During the 1970s, this particular aircraft was disposed of by the United States Military and transferred to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) at Davis-Monthan Air Base in Arizona. The MASDC is responsible for the storage, preservation, and disposal of surplus military aircraft. In this case, O-53-7789 was given the designation CS039 before being sold and placed on the civil registry as N1360D. The Solar T41 APU is a jet engine-powered auxiliary power unit, which provides electrical power and environmental control for the aircraft while it is on the ground. The underwing pylon-mounted pod configuration allowed for easy access to the APU during maintenance and also provided additional flexibility in terms of weight distribution and center of gravity. This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of this Convair JC-131B, as it transitioned from military to civilian use, showcasing the adaptability and versatility of military aircraft.
