EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Douglas C-47B N55L, a military transport aircraft with an illustrious history. Originally delivered to the United States Army Air Force as 43-49414 in December 1944, this C-47B served with the 12th Air Force in Italy during World War II. After the war, it was transferred to the Netherlands and Belgium, bearing the registrations PH-BEN and OO-CND, respectively. In the late 1960s, N55L was acquired by Air Alliance, an international air transport organization. The image captures the aircraft in its Air Alliance livery, likely taken around 1967. Despite its impressive military background, the specific details of its service with Air Alliance remain undisclosed. Tragically, N55L's aviation journey came to an end on 14 February 1971, when it was written off at Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the aircraft's rich history and the important role it played in both military and civilian aviation during the mid-20th century. The Douglas C-47B, also known as the Dakota or DC-3, was a versatile and iconic transport aircraft, widely used by the military and civilian operators alike. Its enduring design and legacy continue to inspire awe and admiration among aviation enthusiasts and historians.
