EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Douglas MC-54M military transport aircraft with the identification number O-49093 (44-9093), serial number 27319, as it sits on the tarmac in Tokyo on April 22, 1954. The United States Air Force (USAF) aircraft was converted to an MC-54M model in 1951, and during this time, it was assigned to the 99th Air Transport Squadron of the Military Air Transport Service. The MC-54M was a versatile military transport plane, capable of carrying cargo, passengers, and even medical evacuation patients. By the early 1970s, this Douglas transport plane had been decommissioned by the USAF and was disposed of to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) on February 5, 1973. However, its story did not end there. The aircraft was eventually sold and placed on the civil registry as N4989K, allowing it to continue its service in the aeronautical transportation industry, long after its military days. This image, taken circa 1960, offers a glimpse into the history of military aviation and the transformation of military aircraft into civilian use. The Douglas MC-54M, with its distinctive design and powerful presence, remains an iconic representation of the era, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of aviation technology throughout history.
