Hanworth Air Park - 1932 - Graf Zeppelin D-LZ127

The German airship Graf Zeppelin D-LZ127 at Hanworth Air Park conducting sight-seeing flights over London. On 18 August 1931, the German airship Graf Zeppelin (D-LZ127) visited Hanworth. On 2 July 1932, it returned as part of a round-Britain tour, and next day operated paid flights over London. LZ127 was unique among all the commercial rigid airships in that it was the only one to exclusively use a gaseous fuel called Blaugas. Blaugas was a mixture of Propylene, Methane, Acetylene, Butylene and Hydrogen, which, being only 9% heavier than air, the use of Blaugas removed the problem of significant weight loss and trim as the fuel was used. Date: 1932

EDITORS COMMENTS
1930s Epochal Moment: The Graf Zeppelin D-LZ127 at Hanworth Air Park This photograph showcases the legendary German airship Graf Zeppelin D-LZ127 at Hanworth Air Park in 1932. The Graf Zeppelin, a marvel of aeronautical engineering, made a historic visit to Hanworth Air Park on 18 August 1931, but it was on 2 July 1932 that it returned as part of a grand round-Britain tour. The following day, the Graf Zeppelin offered sightseeing flights over London, providing an unparalleled perspective of the city for passengers. What set the Graf Zeppelin apart from other commercial rigid airships was its exclusive use of a gaseous fuel called Blaugas. Blaugas, a mixture of Propylene, Methane, Acetylene, Butylene, and Hydrogen, was only 9% heavier than air, significantly reducing the problem of weight loss and trim as the fuel was used. The Graf Zeppelin's visit to Hanworth Air Park in 1932 marked an epochal moment in aviation history. The airship's innovative use of Blaugas fuel and its ability to offer sightseeing flights over London drew considerable attention and excitement. This photograph encapsulates the spirit of adventure and technological prowess that characterized the early days of air travel.
