MoS GAL. 61 TS515
Ministry of Supply General Aircraft Limited GAL.61 TS515. A development of the GAL.56, the GAL.61 was a flying wing with no fuselage or fins incorporating a retractable tricycle landing gear. It had a raised cockpit for a pilot, offset to port, and a prone-position in the starboard wing for an observer. The GAL flying wing programme was cancelled after the crash of GAL.56/01 TS507 on 12 February 1948, which killed the famous glider pilot Robert Kronfeld. The GAL.61 was never flown!. This photograph showcases the innovative design of the MoS GAL.61 TS515, a flying wing aircraft produced by the Ministry of Supply General Aircraft Limited during the late 1940s. The GAL.61 was an evolution of the GAL.56, featuring a unique flying wing design with no fuselage or fins. Instead, it incorporated a retractable tricycle landing gear, a raised cockpit for a pilot offset to port, and a prone-position observer seat in the starboard wing. The GAL flying wing programme, which aimed to push the boundaries of aviation technology, was unfortunately cut short following the tragic crash of GAL.56/01 TS507 on 12 February 1948, which claimed the life of renowned glider pilot Robert Kronfeld. Despite this setback, the GAL.61 continued in development, with the potential to revolutionize the aviation industry. However, the GAL.61 was never given the chance to take flight. The programme was cancelled, leaving this intriguing design a fascinating footnote in aviation history.
