EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Mosscraft MA.1 G-AEST, registered to W.H. Moss, at Pendeford Airport in Wolverhampton during the 1949 Kings Cup Air Race. The MA.1, a single-engine monoplane, had a rich pre-war racing history, but was stored between 1939 and 1945. After the war, the aircraft was refitted with a faired-over rear cockpit and competed once again in several UK air races. In this image, we see Moss, with race number 26, preparing for the Kings Cup Air Race, held at Wolverhampton Airport on that day. Tragically, on 17 June 1950, during the race, Moss was killed when the MA.1 crashed at the Newport, Shropshire turn. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the daring exploits and risks taken by pilots in post-war aviation.
