EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a Royal Air Force Fairey Swordfish III (Searchlight) in flight during the dark hours of the night, 12th November 1943. The Swordfish III, a versatile biplane torpedo bomber, was a vital component of the Royal Air Force's (RAF) maritime fleet during World War II. In this particular configuration, the aircraft was fitted with a searchlight under the starboard wing and ASV (Air-to-Surface Vessel) radar between the undercarriage legs. These modifications were specifically designed for night attacks against enemy shipping and submarines. The searchlight illuminated the target area, enabling the crew to locate and drop their torpedoes with greater accuracy. The ASV radar, meanwhile, helped the crew to detect and locate enemy vessels in the darkness. The Swordfish III's rugged design and versatility made it an indispensable asset to the RAF, contributing significantly to the Allied victory in the Atlantic campaign. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and skill of the RAF pilots and crew who flew these aircraft in the treacherous night skies over the Atlantic, risking their lives to protect the vital supply lines that sustained the Allied war effort.
