EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Sopwith 2F.1 Camel, military registration number N7366, of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) Fleet Air Arm, as it is being prepared for takeoff. The image, believed to have been captured around 1920, reveals the distinct differences between the Sopwith Camel variants. Unlike the F.1 Camel, this particular aircraft does not exhibit the characteristic hump on its back. An intriguing undercarriage arrangement is also noticeable, with the normal undercarriage attached to a cradle, effectively raising the fuselage. This modification was likely implemented to facilitate easier handling and maintenance on board ships. N7366 was part of a batch produced by Arrol, Johnston, a Scottish engineering company, known for their contributions to the aviation industry during this era. The absence of commercial use is evident in this image, as the focus was solely on the military application of this iconic biplane.
