EDITORS COMMENTS
Thorp T-11 Sky Scooter NX91312: A Home-Built Aviation Dream from the 1950s This photograph showcases the Thorp T-11 Sky Scooter NX91312, a home-built aircraft designed by American engineer John Thorp in 1945. Intended as an affordable and accessible option for aviation enthusiasts, the T-11 was one of eight prototypes built by Thorp in 1946. Despite the innovative design and promising potential, the T-11 failed to find a market in the post-war era. The ready availability of ex-military aircraft and the affordability of Cessnas left little room for the T-11 to gain traction. Undeterred, Thorp shelved the project, but it would later resurface as the successful T-211. Home builders and aviation companies continued to produce kits and whole aircraft based on the T-11 design from the early 1950s until the present day. This photograph, taken in the 1950s, captures the essence of a bygone era in aviation history, where innovation and determination met the challenges of affordability and accessibility.
