EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a United States Air Force (USAF) Convair F-102A Delta Dagger (53-1817) of the Air Proving Ground Command during the mid-1950s. The Delta Dagger, a single-engine, all-weather interceptor, was designed by Convair and first flew in 1953. In this image, we see the original short fin fitted to the prototype types and the first 66 production aircraft. However, this design was soon replaced during scheduled servicings and modification programs in 1956 with a taller fin to improve the aircraft's stability and handling. The Delta Dagger, assigned to the 37th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, is seen here at an undisclosed location in July 1962, just before it was withdrawn from use at Kelly Air Force Base in Texas. Today, this historic aircraft is preserved at the History and Traditions Museum at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, where it continues to be a reminder of the pioneering work in jet interceptor technology during the Cold War era.
