"This historic photograph captures the United States Navy's Douglas A3D-1 Skywarrior 130356 (msn 9257) during trials with JATO (Jet-Assisted Take Off) bottles in July 1954. The Skywarrior, the first fleet jet bomber, made its first flight on 29 July 1954, and was delivered to the US Navy later that year. In August 1954, the aircraft was converted to the YA3D-1Q electronic reconnaissance configuration for the Naval Air Test Centre (NATC). From 1956 to 1958, the Skywarrior served with VQ-2, carrying the unit code JQ and call sign 1.16. However, on 16 October 1958, tragedy struck when the aircraft crashed, either on approach to Adana AB, Turkey or near Port Lyautey, Morocco, according to conflicting sources. Four crewmen lost their lives in the incident. The JATO bottles in this image were eventually made obsolete with the development of high-powered steam catapults in the early 1950s."
