EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, United States Navy Pratt-Read XLNE-1 31506 takes center stage at the Harris Hill glider port in Elmira, New York during the first US soaring contest held after World War II. The contest, competition number 32, saw the participation of this Navy glider and its sister ship, Pratt-Read LNE-1 31507, the only other LNE-1 to be assembled out of the 79 ordered. The LNE-1s and XLNE-1 were built by the Gould Aeronautical Division of the Pratt-Read Piano Company of Deep River, Connecticut as military versions of the PR-G1 side-by-side primary glider trainer. After the contest, the remaining aircraft were transferred to the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and United States Army Air Force (USaF) as the TG-32. However, the majority of these gliders remained unassembled until they were disposed of to the civilian market. The XLNE-1 31506, seen here, was eventually sold in Canada as CF-ZCC and later returned to the US as N4476U. Today, it is proudly on exhibit at the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center (formerly National Warplane Museum) in Elmira, Corning RAP, New York. In the background, the ghost of LNE-1 31507 can be seen, a poignant reminder of the only other LNE-1 to fly in this contest and the tragic fate it suffered on August 17, 1946 when it had a fatal accident. The LNE-1s and XLNE-1s represent an important chapter in the history of American aviation, and this photograph captures a moment in time when these military gliders transitioned from the service to civilian hands.
