EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Vickers Viscount 708 G-ARER in all its glory at Southend Airport. With a rich registration history, this aircraft has seen many transformations throughout its years of service. First taking flight on July 3, 1953, it was initially delivered to Air France as F-BGNM before finding a new home with Maitland Drewery Aviation as G-ARER in September 1960. Over the years, this remarkable aircraft changed hands once again and became part of BKS Air Transport from May 29th, 1961 until November 2nd of the same year. Its final chapter unfolded with Air Inter in France where it was registered as F-BEOA starting from June 1966. However, tragedy struck when during take-off with simulated engine failure at Clermont Ferrand in France, the aircraft veered off the runway and suffered irreparable damage. The photograph showcases this historic moment frozen in time - an image that tells a story of resilience and adventure within aviation history. The Vickers Viscount stands tall against the backdrop of Southend Airport, reminding us of its significant role in shaping air travel during its operational days. Mary Evans Picture Library presents this stunning print for enthusiasts who appreciate both aviation heritage and artistic excellence. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by these magnificent flying machines.
