EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Youngman-Baynes High-Lift VT789, a groundbreaking one-off experimental aircraft that graced the skies during the 1948 SBAC Radlett Air Show. Designed by L.E. Baynes, AFRAeS, and built by Heston Aircraft Company Ltd., this flying test-bed was an essential innovation in aviation history, serving as a platform for the experimental slotted flaps developed by R.T. Youngman. The High-Lift VT789 was an intriguing fusion of design and engineering, utilizing components from the Percival Proctor as its foundation. On 5 February 1948, the aircraft took to the skies for the first time at Heston Aerodrome, under the skilled guidance of test pilot Flight Lieutenant Ralph Munday, who carried the military serial VT789. The aircraft's distinctive appearance and innovative technology drew significant attention at the air show, making it a standout among the various aircraft on display. The slotted flaps, a system of flaps with slots along their leading edges, were designed to improve lift and reduce stalling speed, making it an essential development for both military and civilian aviation. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in aviation history, highlighting the ingenuity and determination of the individuals behind this groundbreaking aircraft.
