EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of the evacuation of Constanza Harbour in Romania during the First World War, on 22 October 1916. The Romanian forces had been forced to abandon their positions and retreat in the face of advancing Central Powers forces. In the chaos of the evacuation, several petrol tanks were left behind and were soon engulfed in flames. The harbour, located on the Black Sea coast, had been a vital strategic point for the Romanians during the war, with its deep-water access allowing for the transportation of supplies and troops. However, as the tide turned against them, the decision was made to evacuate the harbour and destroy any valuable assets that could fall into enemy hands. The resulting fire was a spectacular sight, with plumes of smoke and flames rising high into the sky. The intense heat and bright light illuminated the harbour, casting long shadows on the water. The fire continued to burn for several days, a stark reminder of the devastating impact of war on the environment and infrastructure. This photograph, taken in October 1916, is a poignant reminder of the destruction and chaos that accompanied the evacuation of Constanza Harbour during the First World War. The image transports us back to a time of great upheaval and uncertainty, when the outcome of the war was still uncertain and the future looked bleak for many.
