Petticoat Lane, London - Middlesex Street, Aldgate

Petticoat Lane, London - Middlesex Street, Aldgate. A street clothes market on Wentworth Street and Middlesex Street. Secondhand clothes and bric-a-brac had been sold in an area known as Peticote Lane since the early 17th century. An influx of immigrant Huguenots and later immigrants Jews developed the manufacturing in the area and maintained the traditions of trade. Despite a severe decline following WWII, a further influx of Asian immigrants in the 1970s once again restored the areas vitality. Date: circa 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
Petticoat Lane, Middlesex Street, Aldgate: A Vibrant Clothes Market in the Heart of London's East End This evocative photograph captures the bustling scene of Petticoat Lane, a historic street market located in the Aldgate area of London's East End. Established in the early 17th century, this area has been a hub for secondhand clothes and bric-a-brac trading for centuries. The influx of immigrant communities, including Huguenots and Jews, brought manufacturing traditions to the area, further cementing its reputation as a thriving commercial district. The photograph, taken circa 1905, shows the crowded streets of Wentworth Street and Middlesex Street, where vendors display their wares on colorful stalls. The atmosphere is lively and bustling, with shoppers of all ages and backgrounds browsing through the racks of clothing and haggling over prices. The vibrant colors and textures of the fabrics, as well as the diverse crowd, add to the energy and excitement of the scene. Despite a severe decline following World War II, Petticoat Lane was once again revitalized in the 1970s with the arrival of Asian immigrants. Today, the market remains a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a unique shopping experience and a glimpse into London's rich history of textile trading and cultural diversity.
