This print depicts Philippe Néricault Destouches, a renowned French writer of the 18th century. Born in Paris in 1680, Destouches was a prolific playwright, poet, and librettist who made significant contributions to the French literary scene during the Regency period. Destouches' career began in earnest in the late 1710s, and he quickly gained recognition for his wit and skill in crafting engaging and thought-provoking works. His plays, often satirical in nature, were popular among the Parisian elite and were frequently performed at the Comédie-Française. One of his most famous works, "Le Jaloux Exilé" (The Jealous Exile), premiered in 1723 and was a critical and commercial success. In addition to his work in the theater, Destouches also penned numerous poems and librettos for operas. His collaboration with the composer Jean-Philippe Rameau on the opera "Zoroastre" in 1749 is considered a highlight of both men's careers. Despite his success, Destouches' personal life was marked by tragedy. He lost his first wife and several children at a young age, and his second marriage was also unhappy. Nevertheless, he continued to write and produce works that captivated audiences and influenced the literary landscape of his time. Philippe Néricault Destouches died in Paris in 1754, leaving behind a rich and enduring legacy in French literature.
