Macedon Demetrios

EDITORS COMMENTS
Philippos V of Macedon, also known as Philippos the Monger or Philippos the Bastard, was a powerful and influential king who ruled over the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon from 238 to 179 BC. This striking image depicts Philippos in the prime of his reign, dressed in the traditional attire of a Macedonian king. He wears a golden diadem adorned with precious stones, a long tunic, and a himation, a type of cloak, draped over his shoulders. Philippos came to power after the assassination of his father, Perseus, in 168 BC. He was only 17 years old at the time and faced significant challenges to his rule, including threats from the Roman Republic and internal rebellions. Despite these challenges, Philippos proved to be a capable and shrewd ruler. He expanded his kingdom through strategic alliances and military conquests, and he maintained a strong military force to defend against potential threats. One of Philippos' most notable achievements was his successful defense of Macedon against a Roman invasion in 168 BC. He was able to negotiate a peace treaty with the Romans, which allowed Macedon to remain an independent kingdom. Philippos continued to rule Macedon for over 60 years, making him one of the longest-reigning kings in Macedonian history. Despite his military successes and political acumen, Philippos' reign was not without controversy. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle and his numerous marriages and liaisons, which earned him the nickname 'the Monger' or 'the Bastard.' However, these indiscretions did not detract from his ability to rule effectively and maintain Macedon's power and influence in the ancient world. This print of Philippos V is a testament to his status as a powerful and influential ruler in ancient Macedon. It captures the regal bearing and majesty of a king who ruled during a time of great change and upheaval in the ancient world.
