EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of simple joy and innocence in the industrial heart of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, in 1987. The image shows a young boy, dressed in a red jumper and jeans, sitting contentedly beside his bicycle on a metal footbridge. The bridge, adorned with rivets and the faint outlines of railway tracks, spans the Trent River and leads to South Street, an area of Hanley that has since been demolished and redeveloped. Beneath the bridge, the roofs and chimneys of South Street are visible, their slate tiles and brick facades etched with the telltale signs of smoke and soot. The chimneys, belching out plumes of smoke, were a common sight in the Potteries, the industrial powerhouse of Staffordshire, known for its production of ceramics. Despite the gritty backdrop, the boy's expression is one of pure happiness and contentment. He gazes off into the distance, a smile playing on his lips, as if lost in thought or daydream. The bicycle, with its worn-out tires and rusted frame, seems to be an extension of his own spirit, a symbol of freedom and adventure. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era, a time when the industries of Stoke-on-Trent shaped the landscape and the lives of its people. It is a snapshot of childhood, a moment frozen in time, that invites us to reflect on the past and appreciate the beauty and resilience of our industrial heritage.
