1614 1616 Accompanied Colonist Marries Pocahontas Rolfe Matoaka Smith

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This image depicts the historic moment when Native American princess Pocahontas (Matoaka) married English colonist John Rolfe in April 1614, in the Jamestown Settlement in Virginia. Pocahontas, who had been captured by English colonists in 1613 and held as a hostage, had formed a strong bond with John Smith, the charismatic leader of the Jamestown Colony. However, their relationship ended tragically when Smith was forced to leave Jamestown in 1613. Later, Pocahontas met John Rolfe, who had arrived in Virginia in 1616, and the two fell in love. In a rare display of intercultural understanding and acceptance, Pocahontas accompanied Rolfe back to England in 1616 to secure the support of King James I for the struggling Jamestown Colony. Their marriage was a significant event in the early history of America, symbolizing the potential for peaceful coexistence between Native Americans and European settlers. The couple's wedding took place in the church of St. George's, Gravesend, in Kent, England. Pocahontas converted to Christianity and took the name Rebecca Rolfe. Sadly, she fell ill and died in England in March 1617, before the couple could return to Virginia. Her death was a blow to the fledgling colony, but her legacy as a symbol of intercultural understanding and acceptance lived on." This photograph, from Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the romantic and historical significance of Pocahontas and John Rolfe's marriage, a pivotal moment in the early history of America. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to witness the beauty and complexity of this remarkable intercultural union.
