EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 3: Pomatorhinus horsfieldi, the Indian Scimitar Babbler, beautifully depicted in this watercolor illustration by Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn from her "Neilgherry Birds and Miscellaneous" (1858). This exquisite work of art showcases the unique anatomy of this intriguing passerine bird. The Indian Scimitar Babbler, also known as the Long-billed Babbler, is native to the Indian subcontinent and is easily recognizable by its distinctive curved, long, and fan-like bill. The bird is perched on a branch, displaying its striking plumage and anatomical features. Its belly is adorned with a mix of brown and black feathers, while its head and upperparts are a rich chestnut color. The bird's piercing, yellow eyes add to its captivating appearance. The Indian Scimitar Babbler is a member of the family Pomatorhidae, which also includes the Asian and African scimitar-bills. This illustration, created during the nineteenth century (1829-1928), provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this remarkable bird. Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn was a skilled natural history artist whose works were widely published in various ornithological publications of the time.
