EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures RMS Olympic, a White Star Line cruise ship, as it appears from a seaplane during its wartime service in the First World War. The RMS Olympic, launched in 1911, was the sister ship to the ill-fated RMS Titanic and was renowned for its luxury and opulence, offering transatlantic passage to the wealthy and elite. However, with the outbreak of war in 1914, the Olympic was commandeered by the British Admiralty and converted into a troopship, carrying soldiers and supplies across the Atlantic. In this aerial view, taken between 1914 and 1918, the Olympic is seen with several lifeboats deployed, ready for emergency situations. The lifeboats were an essential addition to the ship during its wartime role, as it carried troops and other passengers to various destinations. The image provides a unique perspective of the Olympic, showcasing its vast size and the intricate layout of its lifeboats. This historical photograph offers a poignant reminder of the ship's dual role during the war, transitioning from a symbol of luxury and leisure to a vital transport vessel for troops and supplies. The RMS Olympic continued to serve in the war effort until 1919, making a total of 22 voyages before being returned to the White Star Line for commercial service. This photograph is a testament to the versatility and resilience of the White Star Line's ships during a time of global conflict.
